1940년 뉴질랜드 크라이스트처치에서 태어났지만 네 살 때 가족과 함께 영국으로 갔다. 옥스퍼드대학교 세인트 앤스 칼리지 영문과를 졸업하고, 같은 학교에서 영문학 박사학위를 취득했다. 리즈대학교, 케임브리지대학교, 유니버시티 칼리지 런던, 코넬대학교에서 영문학, 정신분석, 여성학 등을 가르쳤다. 프로이트를 읽게 되면서 본격적으로 정신분석가의 길을 들어선 그녀는 1974년 <정신분석과 여성주의>를 출간하여 당시 프로이트를 적대시했던 여성주의에 정신분석의 필요성을 각인시켰다. 또한 2000년 출간된 히스테리 연구서 <미친 남자들과 메두사들>에서는 부모와 자식의 수직 관계에 기초한 고전적인 정신분석 패러다임을 비판하면서 측면 관계에 주목하기 시작했다. 2003년에는 <동기간>을 출간함으로써 이 새로운 영역을 본격적으로 개척했다. 미첼의 연구는 페미니즘 이론, 정신분석, 젠더연구 등에서 여전히 영향력을 지니고 있다.
