2005년 루마니아 Babes-Bolyai University에서 심리학 박사학위를 받았으며, 영국 런던 Goldsmiths University의 심리치료 연구 명예 교수이다. 영국에서 최초로 인지행 동 치료 교육을 받은 사람 가운데 하나이며, 앨버트 엘리스Albert Ellis 박사, 아론 벡Aaron T. Beck 및 아놀드 라자러스Arnold Lazarus와 함께 훈련받았다. 그는 선도적인 인지행동 치료 접근법인 RECBT(합리적-정서적 인지행동치료)에 관한 연구로 잘 알려져 있다. Warwick University에서 심리치료 훈련을 하고 석사학위를 받았다. 이때 이 분야에 대한 폭넓은 관점을 얻었다. 그의 경력에서 매우 중요하고 지속적이었던 것은 다양성이었는데, 그로 인해 프랙티셔너, 트레이너, 수퍼바이저, 연구자, 작가 및 편집자로 일한다. 개인 및 GP 진료, 임상심리서비스, 민간 정신병원 등 여러 분야에서 치료사로 일했으며, 연속 회기 치료, 단일 회기 치료, 코칭과 커플 치료를 제공한다. 1975년부터 심리 상담사와 치료사를 교육하고 수퍼비전하는 일에 적극적으로 참여했으며 영국, 미국, 남아프리카, 터키 및 이스라엘을 포함한 많은 국가에서 치료사를 훈련했다. 특히 합리적 정서행동 치료(REBT)와 단일 회기 치료(SST) 프랙티셔너를 훈련한다. 현재 240권이 넘는 책을 저술하거나 편집했으며, 21권의 시리즈를 편집했다. 주요 저서로는 『Help Yourself with Single-Session Therapy』, 『Single- Session Therapy and Its Future』, 『Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy』, 『The Single-Session Counselling Primer』, 『Dealing with Emotional Problems in Coaching』, 『Very Brief Therapeutic Conversations』, 『단일 회기 코칭과 비연속 일회성 코칭 Single-Session Coaching and One-At-A-Time Coaching』(남기웅, 안재은 역, 2022), 『Single-Session Therapy』 등이 있다.
