1893년 영국 오크셔에서 태어났다. 청년 시절에 블레이크와 브라우닝의 영향을 받아 시인이 되었다. 1차 세계대전에 출정했다가 귀국한 후, 빅토리아 앨버트 미술관 부관장으로 일하면서 스테인드글라스와 도자기를 취급했다. 이때 소장품 해설을 한 것이 계기가 되어 미술평론가로 활동하게 되었다. 1929년부터는 케임브리지대학, 에든버러대학, 리버풀대학, 하버드대학 교수를 지냈다. 그후 시작(詩作)과 문예비평, 교육이나 정치에 대한 발언과 함께 미술사 연구와 비평에 주력하여, 영국을 비롯한 전 세계 전위예술운동의 선구자로서 업적을 남겼다. 대표작으로 <벌거벗은 용사>(시집), <예술의 의미>, <아나키즘의 철학>, <이콘과 이데아>, <모순적인 경험>(자서전) 등이 있다.
