인간과 식물의 관계를 연구하는 철학자. 에든버러 왕립식물원에서 식물학을 연구했고 호주국립대학교에서 환경철학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 그의 관심 분야는 자연과학으로서의 식물학과 사회과학 및 인문학 전반을 아우르지만, 그 중심에는 식물이 자리하고 있다. 식물 없이는 살 수 없는 인간이 점점 더 식물 세계로부터 멀어지게 된 현실에 주목하고, 생태 논의의 최전선에서 식물과 인간의 관계에 집중하는 ‘철학적 식물학’을 제안하였다. 최근 저서로는 전 세계 신화에서 식물이 어떻게 인식되며 인간과 식물의 관계가 어떻게 그려지는지를 살핀 『식물에 대한 상상: 식물 신화의 책(The Imagination of Plants: A Book of Botanical Mythology)』(2019)이 있다. 현재 뉴질랜드 환경법 이니셔티브(Environmental Law Initiative, ELI) 선임연구원이자 웰링턴빅토리아대학교 법학부의 방문학자이며, 뉴질랜드의 생태계 보전과 생물 다양성 보호를 위해 활발히 활동하고 있다.
