헝가리 부다페스트에서 출생하여, 시카고 대학교에서 박사학위를 취득하고, 현재 뉴스쿨 대학교 사회학과 정치 / 사회이론 석좌교수로 있다. 콜레주 드 프랑스 초빙교수를 지내기도 했다(2012). 그의 지적 사고는 옛 동유럽 공산주의 국가 대항 지식인들의 사고와 오랜 지적 동료인 진 L. 코헨, 그리고 위르겐 하버마스의 사회학적?철학적 저작에 영향을 받아 틀이 갖추어졌다. 그는 정치사회학, 사회이론, 종교사회학을 가르치고 있으며, 사회?정치사상사, 법?헌법이론, 혁명?급진적 변동의 역사적 문제, 법사회학에 관심을 두고 연구하고 있다. 주요 저서로는 『청년 루카치와 서구 마르크스주의의 기원』(The Young Lukacs and the Origins of Western Marxism, 공저, 1979), 『네오 마르크스주의에서 민주주의이론으로』(From Neo-Marxism to Democratic Theory, 1993), 『시민사회, 헌법, 정당성』(Civil Society, Constitution, and Legitimacy, 2000), 『점령하의 헌법 만들기: 이라크의 강요된 혁명 정치』(Constitution Making Under Occupation: The Politics of Imposed Revolution Iraq, 2009) 등이 있다.
