트리니티대학교 철학 교수. 베일러대학교에서 철학과 역사학을 전공한 뒤 하버드대학교 대학원에서 철학 박사 학위를 받았다. 형이상학, 인식론, 윤리학(도덕철학) 분야에서 학문적 업적을 쌓아왔다. 특히 예일대학교 셸리 케이건(Shelly Kagan) 교수보다 1년 앞선 1994년에 시작해 지금껏 이어가고 있는 ‘죽음의 철학(Philosophy of Death)’ 강의가 학부생들에게 인기가 높다. 케임브리지대학교 출판부의 제안으로 그 강의를 엮은 것이 이 책이다. 지은 책으로 『삶과 죽음(Life and Death)》(‘케임브리지 철학의 동반자’ 시리즈), 『필멸의 대상들: 삶과 죽음을 꿰뚫는 존재의 동일성과 지속성(Mortal Objects: Identity and Persistence through Life and Death)』, 『존재한다는 것: 실존주의 사상 입문(Existing: An Introduction to Existentialist Thought)』, 『상처받지 않을 권리: 행복을 지키는 것에 관하여(Invulnerability: On Securing Happiness)』, 『회의론자들(The Skeptics)』, 『본질적 지식(Essential Knowledge)』 등이 있다.
