1939년 뉴질랜드에서 태어나 웰링턴대학에서 역사학과 경제학을 공부하고 케임브리지대학에서 박사학위를 받았다. 인도네시아의 19세기와 독립을 위한 혁명 시기에 대한 국가 연구로 연구 경력을 시작해 동남아시아 지역 연구로 점차 관심사를 넓혀갔다. 지역의 ‘전체사’를 쓰려는 노력의 산물인 『대항해시대의 동남아시아』로 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 1450년부터 1680년 사이 집중적인 해상교역으로 형성된 동남아시아 세계의 공통성과 다양성을 추적한 이 책은 지금도 동남아시아 연구에서 가장 중요한 책으로 꼽힌다. 예일대학, 말라야대학, 싱가포르국립대학, 오스트레일리아국립대학에서 연구하며 후진을 양성했다.
