세계적으로 인정받는 갈등 관리 전문가로서 컬럼비아대학교 티처스 칼리지Teachers College와 지구연구소The Earth Institute의 심리학 및 교육학 교수로 재직하고 있다. ‘모턴 도이치 국제 협력·갈등 해결 센터MD-ICCCR’와 ‘협력, 갈등, 복잡성에 관한 상위연구모임AC4’을 이끈다. 또한 유엔중재지원부서the United Nation Mediation Support Unit의 학술자문위원회 위원, 미국레이마그보위평화재단의 창립이사, 뉴욕주 공인 중재자이자 숙련된 컨설턴트로도 활동한다. 사회적 권력과 건설적 갈등을 주제로 수십 년간 연구하면서 광범위한 집필 활동을 해왔고, 100편이 넘는 논문을 저술했다. 저서로는 이 책 이외에 《분열의 시대, 어떻게 극복할 것인가The Way Out》, 《5퍼센트The Five Percent》 등을 썼다. 《갈등 해결을 위한 핸드북The Handbook of Conflict Resolution》, 《갈등, 상호 의존, 정의Conflict, Interdependence, and Justice》, 《지속 가능한 평화의 심리적 요소Psychological Components of Sustainable Peace》 등도 편집했다. 미국심리학회APA에서 수여하는 초기경력상Early Career Award(2003)과 모턴 도이치 갈등해결상Morton Deutsch Conflict Resolution Award(2015)을 받았으며, 유럽연합의 마리 퀴리 펠로십Marie Curie Fellowship(2015)에 선정됐다.
