캠브리지대학을 졸업하고 옥스퍼드대학과 캠브리지대학에서 석사과정을 공부했으며 켄트(Kent)대학에서 헤겔과 마르크스 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 그는 세계 여러 대학의 방문 교수로 재직하면서 수많은 강연들로 젊은 연구자들을 매료시켰으며 2008년 현재까지 헤겔과 마르크스 철학에 관한 방대한 논문들과 연구서들을 발간한다. 2008년 현재 영국 캔터베리의 켄트대학교 철학과에 봉직한다. 지은 책으로 Marxism and Human Nature(Routledge, 1998), Reality and Reason: Dialectic and the Theory of Knowledge(Blackwell, 1985), Hegel, Marx and Dialect: A debate(1980, reprinted Gregg, 1994)가 있으며, Socialism, Feminism and Philosophy: a Radical Philosophy Reader(Routledge, 1991), Socialism and Democracy(Macmillan, 1991), Socialism and Morality(Macmillan, 1990)를 공동 편집했다. 또한 Radical Philosophy(1972)와 The Marx and Philosophy Society(2003)의 창간이사다. 2008년 현재 마르크스와 헤겔의 소외이론과 자아실현이론에 관한 저술을 집필 중이다.
