벨기에 출신의 페미니스트 철학자. 벨기에와 프랑스에서 철학, 문학, 언어학, 정신분석학 등 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 수학했고, 프랑스 여성해방운동에도 참여했다. 라캉의 정신분석학 세미나에 참여하여 정신분석 수련의 과정을 밟았지만, 수많은 남성 철학자 및 프로이트와 라캉의 이론을 남근중심주의 담론이라고 날카롭게 비판한 철학박사 학위논문 『반사경: 타자인 여성에 대하여』(1974)를 제출한 후, 파리 프로이트학회에서 축출되고 재직 중이던 파리8대학에서도 파면당했다. 이후 주로 유럽의 여러 대학에서 연구, 강의, 저술 활동을 계속하면서, 지금까지도 꾸준히 저서를 출간하고 매년 학생들과 세미나를 여는 등 학자로서 열정을 이어가고 있다. 주요 저서에 『하나이지 않은 성Ce sexe qui n’en est pas un』(1977), 『성차의 윤리학Ethique de la difference sexuelle』(1984), 『차이의 시대Le Temps de la difference. Pour une revolution pacifique』(1989), 『나, 너, 우리Je, tu, nous.
