미국 뉴욕주립대학교 스토니브룩에서 철학과 석좌교수로 페미니즘 철학과 페미니즘 윤리, 장애학, 언어철학 분야에서 수많은 논문을 저술하고 선집을 편집했다. 돌봄과 인지장애의 문제를 철학에 도입한 연구로 수많은 상을 받았다. 단독 저서로는 『돌봄: 사랑의 노동』, 『메타포(Metaphor)』가 있으며, 함께 쓴 책으로는 『인지장애와 도덕철학에 대한 그 도전(Cognitive Disability and Its Challenge to Moral Philosophy)』, 『페미니즘 철학에 대한 블랙웰 가이드(The Blackwell Guide to Feminist Philosophy)』, 『돌봄의 주체(The Subject of Care)』, 엮은 책으로는 『프레임, 현장, 대조(Frames, Fields and Contrasts)』, 『여성과 도덕 이론(Women and Moral Theory)』이 있다. 『의존을 배우다』로 2020년 미국출판인협회 PROSE 철학상을 받았다.
