미국 뉴욕의 패션 인스티튜트 오브 테크놀로지(Fashion Institute of Technology; F.I.T.) 사회학과 교수. 분카 패션 칼리지(Bunka Fashion College)와 F.I.T.에서 패션을 공부하고, 컬럼비아 대학교(Columbia University)에서 사회학 석사 및 박사 학위를 취득하였다. 패션스터디즈에 관한 사회학적 연구 방법론을 정립하는 데 기여하였으며, 일본 하위문화 스타일, 포스트 하위문화와 패션의 관계 등에 관한 다수의 연구를 발표하였다. 주요 저서로 『패션과 복식 연구방법론(Doing Research in Fashion and Dress)』(2011), 『일본 하위문화의 패션화(Fashioning Japanese Subcultures)』(2012), 『스니커즈: 패션, 젠더, 하위문화(Sneakers: Fashion, Gender, and Subculture)』(2016) 등이 있다. 패션스터디즈 분야의 권위 있는 학술지인 『패션 이론(Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture)』을 비롯하여, 『패션 프랙티스(Fashion Practice: The Journal of Design, Creative Process and the Fashion Industry)』와 『인터내셔널 저널 오브 패션스터디즈(International Journal of Fashion Studies)』의 편집위원으로 활동하고 있다.
