영국 브리스톨 대학의 척추동물 고생물학 교수로, 세계 선두의 고생물학연구단Paleontology Research Group을 이끌고 있다. 『공룡: 사라진 세계의 새로운 모습Dinosaurs: New Visions of a Lost World』, 『재발견된 공룡The Dinosaurs Rediscovered』, 『대멸종』(류운 옮김, 뿌리와이파리, 2007)을 포함해 50권이 넘는 책을 썼다. 고생물학에 봉사하고 지역사회에 참여한 공로로 2021년에 대영제국 4등훈장을 받았으며 매체에서 공룡과 생명의 역사를 논의할 때마다 단골로 출연한다.
