노스캐롤라이나 대학교 명예 철학 교수이자 코네티컷 대학교 석좌 초빙 교수다. 단행본 6권과 100편에 달하는 논문을 출간했다. 단행본은 《자연 언어에서 논리적 형식》(1984), 《의식》(1987), 《판단과 정당화》(1988), 《양상과 의미》(1994), 《의식과 경험》(1998), 《현실적 조건문》(2001)이다. 주요 관심사는 심리철학, 언어철학, 인식론, 형이상학이다. 특히 《자연 언어의 논리적 형식》에서 의미 개념을 상세히 분석하고, 문장의 진리 조건 개념이 언어적 의미의 핵심에 놓여 있다는 견해를 일관되게 주장한다. 형식 언어와 자연 언어를 조화시킬 대안을 모색하고 의미론과 화용론의 구별을 위협하는 특정 언어 현상들을 탐구하면서, 의미론이 화용론으로 흡수되어 사라질 것이라거나 독자적인 학문이 될 수 없다는 주장에 맞서 의미론의 자율성을 굳세게 옹호한다.
