저자 페니 스파크는 세계적인 디자인역사학자로 영국 서섹스(Sussex)대학에서 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 킹스턴(Kingston)대학의 교수이자 연구부문 부총장이며, 모던인테리어연구소 소장으로 활동하고 있다. 특히 왕립미술대학(RCA)과 빅토리아알버트뮤지엄(V&A)의 공동과정으로 진행된 디자인사프로그램의 운영은 그녀의 광범위한 저서활동에 많은 영향을 주었다. 대표적인 저서로는 《에토레 소싸스》(1982), 《20세기 디자인과 문화》(1986), 《일본 디자인》(1986), 《이탈리아 디자인》(1988), 《핑크색이기만 하다면: 취향의 성정치학》(1995), 《디자인의 역사》(1998), 《디자인의 탄생》(2010) 외 다수가 있다.
