철학사에 새로운 이정표를 세운, 20세기의 가장 중요한 철학자. 1889년 독일 슈바르츠발트 지역의 작은 마을 메스키르히에서 태어났다. 프라이부르크 대학교에서 신학과 철학을 전공했으며, 에드문트 후설에게 현상학을 배웠다. 1923년부터 마르부르크 대학교에서, 1928년부터는 프라이부르크 대학교에서 철학을 가르쳤다. 1933-1934년에는 프라이부르크 대학교의 총장을 지냈다. 대표작 『존재와 시간』에서 현존재의 개념을 제시하면서 존재란 무엇인가 하는 근본적인 물음에 접근했고, 이 책으로 독일 철학의 최전선에 섰다. 현상학, 실존주의, 해석학, 구조주의, 포스트 모더니즘 등 현대의 철학과 문학, 예술, 언어 등 문화 전반에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 1976년에 영면했다. 주요 저서로는 『존재와 시간』 외에도 『현상학의 근본문제들(Die Grundprobleme der Phänomenologie)』, 『형이상학의 근본개념들(Die Grundbegriffe der Metaphysik)』, 『철학에의 기여(Beiträge zur Philosophie)』, 『숲길(Holzwege)』, 『강연과 논문(Vorträge und Aufsätze)』, 『이정표(Wegmarken)』 등이 있으며, 1975년부터 전집 간행이 시작되어 100여 권이 출간되었다.
