미국의 대표적 사회학자 가운데 한 사람으로 현재 미국 캘리포니아대학 리버사이드캠퍼스(UCR) 사회학과 교수다. 1942년에 태어나 1968년에 코넬대학에서 사회학 박사학위를 받고, 1969년부터 캘리포니아대학 리버사이드캠퍼스에서 사회학을 가르쳤다. 40권의 저서와 9권의 편저서, 200편이 넘는 학술논문을 출간했다. 영국 캠브리지대학, 독일 브레멘대학, 빌레펠트대학, 중국 산둥대학 객원교수를 역임했다. 주요 연구분야는 사회학 이론, 감정사회학, 종족관계, 사회제도, 사회계층, 진화사회학 등이다. 최근 3부작인 《사회학의 이론적 원리》(Theoretical Principles of Sociology) 외에 사회학 이론에 관한 광범위한 책을 출간했다. 주요 저서로는 Revolt from the Middle: Emotional Stratification and Change in Post-Industrial Societies(2015), The Emergence and Evolution of Religion: By Means of Natural Selection(2018), The New Evolutionary Sociology: Recent and Revitalized Theoretical and Methodological Approaches(2018) 등이 있다.
