미국의 대표적인 현대법철학자의 한 명으로, 텍사스 주에서 태어나 스탠포드대학교에서 경제학을, 그리고 동 대학교 로스쿨에서 법학을 전공했다. 그 이후 듀크대학교, 일리노이대학교 등에서 가르치다가 1939년 하버드대학교 교수로 부임해서 정년까지 봉직했다. 로스코 파운드(Roscoe Pound) 교수의 뒤를 이어 ‘Carter Professor of General Jurisprudence’ 직에 임명되었으며, 미국 정치 및 법철학회(The American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy) 회장을 역임했다. 대표적인 저서로는 Law in Quest of Itself(1940), Basic Contract Law(1947), Problems of Jurisprudence(1949), The Morality of Law(1964), Legal Fictions(1967), Anatomy of Law(1968) 등이 있다.
