케임브리지 대학교에서 물리학으로 박사 학위를 받고, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 신학을 공부한 후에 성공회 사제가 되었다. 엑시터 대학교(University of Exeter)에서 물리학을, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 물리학과 신학을 가르쳤으며, 2012년부터 에든버러 대학교에서 과학과 종교(Science and Religion) 분과를 담당하고 있다. 70여 편(공저 포함)의 물리학 논문과 10여 편의 신학 논문을 썼고, 특히 브람웰(Steve Bramwell, UCL) 교수와 함께 ‘스핀 아이스(spin ice)’ 개념을 발견한 것은 물리학 분야의 상당한 업적이다.
