저자 존 듀이(John Dewey, 1859-1952)는 미국의 저명한 철학자, 교육학자이자 사회사상가로, 포스트모더니즘과 더불어 오늘날 더욱 각광받고 있다. 포스트-포스트모더니스트라 불리기도 하는 그는 여러 분야에 걸쳐 수많은 저작을 남겼는데, 철학분야의 주저로는 「경험과 자연」(1925) 「확실함의 열망」(1929) 「경험으로서의 예술」(1934) 등이 있고, 교육분야의 주저로는 「민주주의와 교육」(1916) 등이 있다.
