1966년 전남 진도에서 태어나 광주광역시에서 자랐다. 그래서인지 그는 진도의 예(藝)와 광주의 의(義)를 자연스레 마음에 품고 살아왔다. 전남대학교 영어영문학과를 졸업하고, 동 대학원에서 영어학 석사와 박사 학위를 취득했다. 이후 미국 스탠퍼드대학교 언어학과에서 객원학자로 연구했으며, 2001년부터 조선이공대학교 교양과 교수로 재직하며 영어와 글로벌 문화를 가르치고 있다. 2014년 유화를 시작한 이후 지난 10여 년 동안 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어왔고, 다수의 그룹전에 참여했으며 전국 공모전에서 여러 차례 수상했다. 이제는 학자의 길을 넘어, 화가로서의 삶을 새롭게 열고 있다. Born in Jindo, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, in 1966, Myonghi Chai grew up in Gwangju. Naturally, she came to cherish both Jindo’s artistic heritage and Gwangju’s spirit of righteousness. She earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English Linguistics from Chonnam National University, and later conducted research as a visiting scholar in the Department of Linguistics at Stanford University. Since 2001, she has served as a professor of liberal arts at Chosun College of Science & Technology, teaching English and global culture. Since beginning to paint in oils in 2014, she has steadily pursued her artistic journey with dedication, taking part in numerous group exhibitions and receiving several awards at national art competitions. Today, moving beyond her life as a scholar, she opens a new chapter as a painter.
