하버드 대학교에서 사회학을, 스탠퍼드 대학원 석사과정에서 심리학을 전공했고, UC버클리에서 사회학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 예일, 버지니아, UC리버사이드와 같은 여러 대학을 거쳐 현재는 펜실베이니아 대학교 사회학과의 대학원 학과장으로 재직하고 있다. 미시 수준의 사회적 행위와 거시 구조를 연결하고 통합할 수 있는 사회학 이론 체계를 구축하려는 작업을 진행해왔다. 외교관인 아버지의 근무지를 따라 독일, 스페인, 남미 지역에서 어린 시절을 보냈기에 “평범한 미국 아이와 특권을 지닌 외국 아이 사이를 왔다 갔다” 했고, “영국에서 초등학교를 다니며 계층이라는 사회학적 실재를 발견하고 체험”했으며, 1960년대 중반에 버클리에서 공부할 때는 민권운동에 참여하며 연대의 체험이 엄청난 정서적 에너지를 체험했다고 한다. 주요 저서로는 Conflict Sociology(Academic Press, 1975), Credential Society(Academic Press, 1979), Weberian Sociological Theory(Cambridge University Press, 1986), Theoretical Sociology(Harcourt College Pub., 1988), Sociological Insight: Non-Obvious Sociology(Oxford University Press, 1992), The Sociology of Philosophies(Harvard University Press, 1992), Four Sociological Traditions(Oxford University Press, 1994), Violence: Micro-Sociological Theory(Princeton University Press, 2008) 등이 있다.
