콜럼비아대학에서 약리학 학사학위를, 미네소타대학에서 약리학 박사학위를 받았다. 심혈관계에 대한 일산화 질소의 중요성을 발견한 공로를 인정받아 1998년도 노벨 의학상을 수상했다. 2005년 현재 UCLA 의대 약리학과의 석좌교수로 있다.
