근현대사를 전공한 케임브리지대 명예교수로서, 사학과 교수단장과 코퍼스 크리스티 칼리지(Corpus Christi College) 학장을 역임했으며, 현재 케임브리지 정보학 세미나를 정기적으로 주재하면서 ≪정보·테러 연구 저널(Journal of Intelligence and Terrorism Studies)≫의 편집인으로 활동하고 있다. 서방으로 망명한 구소련 스파이들과 공동으로 작업해 『KGB 내부 이야기(KGB The Inside Story)』 등 다수의 KGB 관련 문헌을 생산했다. 영국의 국내정보기관인 보안부(MI5)의 공식 사가로서 그 백년사를 다룬 『왕국의 방위(The Defence of the Realm)』를 집필했다. BBC 라디오와 TV 방송에서 다수의 역사 다큐멘터리 프로그램을 진행했다.
