Mostly about the state of liberal arts education in the US, but also includes an account of differences between US and European approaches to education and his own personal experience growing up in Bombay, the Indian educational system, and his ultimate decision to attend Yale (his elder brother chose Harvard).
Chapter 2, A Brief History of Liberal Education. After brief history of how university curricula developed in Europe, and rise of the American liberal arts tradition among major universities such as Harvard and Yale, he discusses the founding of Yale-National University of Singapore in 2013 and aspects of the program (pages 67-71). Lots of nice comments on the program. He concludes, “Yale-NUS should become a model studied around the world”.
Chapter 3, Learning to Think. More on Yale-NUS, p 75, 81. Comments on Singapore, and other Asian countries, p 93-97. Rest of chapter deals with differences between US system and other countries in Asia and Europe.
