러시아 무르만스크에서 태어나 1991년 가족과 함께 미국으로 이주했다. 1997년 콜로라도 덴버에 본사를 둔 가치투자 회사 IMA에 입사한 후 2007년 최고 투자 책임자가 되었고 2012년 CEO로 취임했다. 투자에 관한 두 권의 책 《적극적 가치투자》 《횡보하는 증시에 관한 작은 책》을 출간했다. 그의 글은 참신하고 창의적인 상식이 넘친다고 평가받으며, 포브스는 그를 “새로운 벤자민 그레이엄”으로 칭송했다. 파이낸셜 타임즈, 배런즈, 인스티튜셔널 인베스터 등의 매체에 글을 기고한다. 덴버에서 아내와 세 자녀와 함께 살고 있으며 회사를 경영하면서 투자, 독서, 클래식 음악 감상, 체스, 인생에 관한 글쓰기를 즐긴다.
