자본주의사회에서의 문화 생산의 복잡하고 모순된 관계를 집요하게 탐구하고 있는 음악‧미디어 연구, 음악사회학 분야의 최고 권위자 중 한 명. 리즈대학교 미디어커뮤니케이션학부 ‘미디어, 음악, 문화’ 전공 교수로 재직 중이다. 이 책 《음악은 왜 중요할까?》는 저자의 음악에 대한 학제적 사유의 총체적 결과물로, 여기서 저자가 제시하는 ‘음악에 대한 비판적 변호’는 비판이론의 비관적 시각과 심리학적 치유 담론의 낙관적 시각 사이에서 긍정적인 ‘제3의 길’을 모색하면서도 여전히 날카로운 비판의 힘을 일깨워준다. 이 책은 스페인어, 러시아어 등으로 번역되면서 음악의 사회적 가치, 공공성 등을 토론하기 위한 필독서로 자리매김하고 있다. 그는 또한 디지털 미디어 이론 분야의 권위자로, 2011년에 사라 베이커와의 공저로 《창의 노동과 미디어 산업: 미디어 노동 연구의 이론과 실제》(커뮤니케이션북스, 2016)를 발표했다. 이듬해인 2012년에 펴낸 단독 저서 《문화산업》은 저자 특유의 ‘비판적 변호’라는 방식으로 프랑크푸르트학파의 문화산업 비판을 계승하면서도 문화산업의 잠재성과 역동성을 읽어내고 있는 이론적 저서다. 이 책은 1980년대 이후 텔레비전, 영화, 음악, 출판을 비롯한 문화산업의 변화와 연속성을, 그리고 관련 산업에서 디지털 플랫폼의 역할이 중요해지는 현실을 이론적으로 분석하여 4판까지 개정판이 출판될 만큼 학계의 호평을 받으며 중국어, 러시아어, 이탈리아어 등으로 번역되었다. 최근에는 ‘스트리밍 시대의 음악 문화(Music Culture in the Age of Streaming)’를 주제로 공동 연구를 수행 중이다.
