하버드 대학교의 초기 미국사 교수이다. 그녀는 하버드 대학교 외에도 네 곳의 대학에서 강의를 하고 있다. 노스웨스턴 대학교를 졸업하고, 존 홉킨스 대학교에서 석사 및 박사 학위를 취득하였으며, 영국에 대한 연구로 풀브라이트 장학금을 받기도 했다. 지금까지 그녀가 발표한 논픽션 분야의 책은 총 네 권이다. 그중 《미국 최초의 과학자: 벤저민 프랭클린과 천재 탐구The First Scientific American: Benjamin Franklin and the Pursuit of Genius》(2006)는 <미국 18세기 연구회>의 ‘애너벨 젠킨스 전기상’을 수상했고, 《LA 타임스》가 선정한 ‘올해의 책’ 후보에 올랐다. 현재 매사추세츠 주州 케임브리지에 살고 있는 그녀는 인간과 자연이 공존하는 주제에 대해 큰 관심을 가지고 있다.
