캘리포니아대학교 샌타바버라캠퍼스의 환경학 교수다. 캘리포니아대학교 로스앤젤레스캠퍼스에서 박사학위를 받았고, 하버드대학교와 스탠퍼드대학교에서 박사후과정을 마쳤다. 환경사학자이자 보존과학자이며 자연문화 지리학자로, 사람들이 다른 종들과 공간과 자원(그들의 서식지)을 공유할 때 어떤 일이 일어나는지 탐구한다. 저서인 《회색곰이 떠난 자리: 멸종위기종과 캘리포니아의 지역 정치After the Grizzly: Endangered Species and the Politics of Place in California》를 비롯해 수십 편의 논문을 발표했다.
