‘기업 문화의 아버지’로 인정받는 세계적인 조직심리학의 대가. MIT 슬론 경영대학원의 석좌 교수로 재직했다. 시카고대학교, 스탠퍼드대학교, 하버드대학교에서 공부했으며 1952년 하버드대학교에서 사회심리학 박사 학위를 받았다. 1956년 MIT 슬론 경영대학원 교수로 임명, 약 52년간 학생들을 가르쳤다. 애플, 디지털이쿼프먼트코퍼레이션, 시티은행, PG&E, 휴랫팩커드, 셸, BP, 싱가포르 정부, 국제원자력기구 등 수많은 조직이 그의 컨설팅을 거쳤다. 《조직심리학》(3판), 《새로 쓴 절차 컨설팅》, 《경력의 닻》(4판, 공저), 《겸손한 컨설팅》, 《리더의 돕는 법》 등 많은 책을 집필했으며 피터 샤인과 《조직문화의 리더십》, 《기업문화 생존안내서》, 《리더의 질문법》 등을 썼다. 2019년 전미경영학회로부터 저명학자·현업종사자상을, 2012년 국제리더십협회로부터 공로상을, 2015년 국제조직개발네트워크로부터 조직개발 공로상을 수상했으며 슬로베니아 IEDC 블레드 경영대학원 명예 박사 학위를 받았다. 조직심리학 분야에 많은 유산을 남긴 그는 2023년 1월에 세상을 떠났다.
