서울에서 태어났고, 뉴질랜드 오클랜드에서 자랐다. 영국 옥스퍼드대학에서 고전학 전공으로 박사학위를 받았고, 호주연구위원회(Australian Research Council) 박사후 연구원을 거쳤다. 현재 멜버른대학 고전학·고고학 교수로 재직 중이며, 호주국립인문학아카데미(Australian Academy of the Humanities) 펠로로 활동하고 있다. 지은 책으로 고대 그리스와 중국 문화의 비교 연구를 담은 《고대 그리스와 고대 중국의 종족과 외국인(Ethnicity and Foreigners in Ancient Greece and China)》, 고대 후기 내륙아시아의 훈과 유라시아 제국의 역사를 다룬 《훈, 로마, 그리고 유럽의 탄생(The Huns, Rome and the Birth of Europe)》 등 9권이 있다.
