2000년부터 하버드 교육대학원 ‘프로젝트 제로’의 연구 책임자로 일했다. 그전에는 뉴질랜드, 미국의 인디애나주와 콜로라도주 등지에서 초등학교부터 중등학교까지 여러 학년의 학생들에게 미술부터 수학까지 여러 교과 영역을 가르쳤다. 그는 교육자이자 연구자로서 어떤 학습 환경에서든 사고력, 이해력, 창의력을 증진하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지에 주목해왔다. 이 주제로 글과 책을 썼으며 비디오를 제작했다. 리치하트는 교실 기반 연구를 통해 학생들의 사고 성향 계발에 학교 문화와 교실 문화의 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 그는 조직 문화를 형성하는 힘에 주목하여 교육자들이 교실 안팎에서 교육과 학습을 새로운 관점에서 바라보도록 도왔고, 많은 학교와 단체에서 리치하트의 아이디어를 수용하고 적용하고 있다. 리치하트는 2002년 『지적 인격(Intellectual Character)』에서 학생들이 학교에서 어떻게 생활해야 학습자이자 사고하는 사람이 되는지를 분석하면서 시험 점수보다 양질의 교육이 훨씬 중요함을 강조했다. 사고 루틴을 다룬 『생각이 보이는 교실(Making Thinking Visible)』(2011)을 펴낸 뒤에는 사고 루틴이 교실 루틴이 되게 하는 문화를 다룬 『사고 문화 창조(Creating Cultures Of Thinking)』(2015)를 썼고, 학생들의 사고를 가시화했을 때의 강력한 효과를 『사고 가시화의 힘(Power of Making Thinking Visible)』(2020)에서 설파했다.
