1942년 뉴욕의 브루클린에서 태어난 존 더닝은 대학 졸업 후 《덴버 포스트》에서 기자로 근무했다. 그러다 1970년 기자직을 그만두고 글을 쓰기 시작했지만 1981년 중고·희귀도서 전문 서점 ‘알곤킨(Algonquin)’을 개업하면서 글 작업을 중단했다. 하지만 동료 작가들의 강력한 권유로 1992년 다시 글쓰기의 세계로 돌아와 첫 번째 클리프 제인웨이 시리즈인 『책 사냥꾼의 죽음』을 출간했다. 희귀도서의 세계를 적나라하게 다룬 『책 사냥꾼의 죽음』(1992)은 창의적인 미스터리에 수여하는 네로 울프 상을 수상했으며, 두 번째 시리즈인 『책 사냥꾼의 흔적』(1995)이 《뉴욕 타임스》에서 ‘주목할 만한 책’으로 선정되며 작품성을 인정받았다. 이 시리즈는 총 다섯 권으로 구성되어 있으며 제목에 책을 뜻하는 ‘Book’이 들어가 있는 것이 특징이다. 존 더닝의 주요 작품으로는 에드거 상 후보에 오른 『데드라인(Deadline)』,『네덜란드 제안(The holland Suggestions)』, 그리고 미국의 라디오 역사를 담은 『생방송: 올드타임 라디오 대백과(On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio)』 등이 있다. 그는 2013년 현재 부인 헬렌과 함께 덴버에 거주하고 있다.
