미시건 주립대학의 교육대학원에서 철학 박사학위를 받았으며, 생명공학 회사의 화학자로, 전문대학의 화학교사로, 방과후 프로그램 교사로 일했다. 2004년 현재 컬럼비아 대학 과학교육과 조교수로 있다.
