Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative, and History (Paperback, 20, Twentieth Anniv)

트라우마 이론의 선구적 연구자로, 현재 코넬대학교 영문과 Class of 1916 Professor of English이며 비교문학과 교수이기도 하다. 프린스턴대학교 학부를 마친 뒤 예일대학교에서 1988년 비교문학 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 예일과 에모리대학교에서 교수를 역임하며 ‘홀로코스트 증언Holocaust Testimony’ 아카이브를 구축했고, 2011년 코넬대학교에 부임했다. 캐루스의 연구는 문학·정신분석·역사·윤리 담론을 가로지르며 트라우마의 언어와 증언 문제를 정교하게 조명하여, 영미권은 물론 전 세계 인문학에서 트라우마 연구를 핵심 분야로 정착시키는 데 크게 기여했다. 대표작으로 《트라우마, 소유하지 못한 경험Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative, and History》, 《역사의 재에서의 문학Literature in the Ashes of History》, 《트라우마 경청하기: 이론과 치료의 최전선에서 나눈 대화Listening to Trauma: Conversations with Leaders in the Theory and Treatment of Catastrophic Experience》 등이 있으며, 초기 저작 《경험적 진리와 비평적 허구: 로크, 워즈워스, 칸트, 프로이트Empirical Truths and Critical Fictions: Locke, Wordsworth, Kant, Freud》와 편저 《트라우마: 기억의 탐구Trauma: Explorations in Memory》도 널리 읽힌다.
