하버드대 로스쿨 출신 변호사라는 명함을 버리고 1980년대 초반에 벤처비즈니스의 세계로 뛰어들었다. 애플에서 일하다, 클라리스(Claris Corporation)를 공동창업했다. 이후 루카스아트 엔터테인먼트, 크리스털 다이내믹스의 대표를 역임했다. 그 후로도 GO, 웹TV, 티보, 몬도 미디어 등 다양한 벤처기업의 경영에 참여했고, 또 현재도 하고 있다. 그 스스로가 벤처업계의 성공사례이기도 하지만, 기업가정신 교수이며, 높은 수익률을 자랑하는 벤처투자가이기도 하다. '실리콘밸리의 철학자'라는 별명을 가지고 있다.
