이탈리아 화학자, 작가. 1919년 7월 31일 이탈리아 토리노의 자유로운 유대계 가정에서 태어났다. 수줍음 많은 성격에 어려서부터 학업에 뛰어났고 유대인이라는 별다른 자각 없이 유년을 보냈다. 1941년 토리노 대학교 화학과를 수석으로 졸업했지만 유대인을 탄압하는 파시스트 정부의 인종법 때문에 학업을 중단했다. 이후 행동당 조직 ‘정의와 자유’에 가담, 파시즘에 저항운동을 벌이다 1943년 12월 파시스트 민병대에 체포되었고 이듬해 2월 독일 아우슈비츠 수용소로 이송되었다. 1945년 1월 구소련의 붉은군대에 의해 해방되기까지 11개월을 수용소에서 보냈는데, 당시 새로 들어온 수감자는 평균 석 달을 버티기 어려웠다. 해방 이후에도 고향인 토리노를 밟기까지는 유럽 각지를 돌아 아홉 달이 걸렸다. 1946년, 훗날을 해로할 루치아를 만났고 도료 공장의 화학자와 관리자 일을 생업으로 삼았으며 수용소 경험을 글로 옮기기 시작했다. 이듬해 아우슈비츠 수용소의 삶을 기록한 첫 책 『이것이 인간인가』를 지인의 신생 출판사를 통해 출간했으나 10년 이상 큰 주목을 받지 못하다가 1963년 수용소에서 집으로 돌아오는 여정을 담은 『휴전』을 출간해 제1회 캄피엘로상을 받았다. 이후 『주기율표』(1975), 『멍키스패너』(1978), 『지금이 아니면 언제?』(1982), 『가라앉은 자와 구조된 자』(1986) 등을 발표하며 세계적 작가로 이름을 알렸다. 1987년 4월 11일, 자택의 층계참에서 뛰어내려 자살했다. 어머니 등 가족에 대한 죄책감과 수용소 트라우마로 우울증을 앓은 것으로 알려졌다.
