캐나다 출신의 세계적인 현대 철학자로, 정치철학ㆍ철학사ㆍ공동체주의ㆍ헤겔 연구 등으로 알려져 있다. 옥스퍼드대학교 철학 박사이며, 맥길대학교 교수, 옥스퍼드대학교 석좌 교수를 역임했고, 현재 맥길대학교 철학과 명예 교수이다. 주요 저서로 <헤겔>, <자아의 원천들>, <불안한 현대사회>, <근대의 사회적 상상>, <헤겔과 현대사회>, <세속화와 현대 문명> 등이 있다.
