반야용선은 돌아가신 분들의 극락왕생을 염원하면서 천도재 같은 의례에 사용되곤 한다. 또 천수경을 독송할 때는 ‘어서 속히 반야선에 오르기(원아속승반야선願我速乘般若船)’를 염원하기도 한다. 반야는 불교에서 ‘지혜’를 뜻한다. 반야용선은 지혜를 의미하는 ‘반야(般若)’와 ‘용(龍)’이 만나 아미타불이 계시는 서방정토에 왕생하기를 바라는 의식구로 어느 순간부터 정착된 것이다. 그런데 우리나라에서 제작된 반야용선 그림 중에서, 현존하는 가장 오래된 그림은 ‘미륵하생신앙’과 관련된다. 배를 타고 도달하고자 하는 곳이 아미타불이 계신 서방정토가 아니라 미륵불이 법회를 여는 곳이다. 미륵하생신앙에서 미륵불은 중생들이 사는 이 세상에 나투어 깨달음으로 인도한다. 배에 탄 중생들은 저 세상이 아니라 이 세상의 어느 곳으로 향한다. 반야용선 신앙이 꼭 죽음과 관련된 것만이 아니었음을 알 수 있다. 조선 후기에 지어진 법당에는 많은 용이 새겨져 있다. 법당은 기본적으로 부처님이 계신 세계를 구현한다. 현실에서는 가장 높은 사람이 있는 곳, 즉 궁전으로 건축했다. 재밌는 것은 그러면서도 법당의 어간 기둥 위에 용의 머리를 새겨, 법당은 바다 위를 헤쳐 나가는 반야용선임을 강조한다. 법당 기단에 게와 거북 등 수중 생물을 새겨, 법당이 있는 곳이 바다임을 다시 한번 강조한다. 어떤 이는 반야용선을 타고 지혜의 바다로 가고, 어떤 이는 아미타불이 있는 극락세계로 향한다. 불교에서는 이 세상을 고통의 바다(고해苦海)로 표현한다. 고통의 바다를 벗어나기 위해, 반야용선을 타고 어디로 향할 것인가를 고민해 보자.
