하버드대학교의 어니스트 번바움 비교문학 교수로, 하버드대학교 비교문학 학과장과 세계문학연구소 소장이기도 하다. 『세계문학이란 무엇인가What Is World Literature』, 『비교문학Comparing Literature』, 6권으로 구성된 『롱맨 세계문학 선집Longman Anthology of World Literature』 등 다수의 책을 저술하거나 편집했다. 국내 번역서로 『데이비드 댐로쉬의 세계문학 읽기How to Read World Literature』가 있다. 전 세계 50여개국에서 세계문학을 주제로 강의하고 있으며 그의 하버드대학교 온라인 강의 ‘세계문학 걸작Masterpieces of World Literature’은 지금까지 약 10만 명이 수강했다.
