미국 프린스턴대학교에서 철학박사 학위를 받은 후 코넬대학교와 메사추세츠공과대학교(MIT)를 거쳐 하버드대학교에서 철학 교수를 지냈다. 롤즈는 자유주의적 전통 안에서 정의에 관한 새로운 이론을 확립했으며, 특히 '자유주의적 평등'의 입장을 제시한 『정의론』(1971; 1999)은 미국 정치철학사에 한 획을 긋는 저작으로서 당대의 사유에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 그는 이후 『정의론』에 대한 여러 비판을 수용하면서 자신의 입장을 수정하여 '정치적 자유주의'를 주창했고 이를 국제 관계에 적용했다. 롤즈 후기의 사유는 『정치적 자유주의』(1993)와 『만민법』(1999)에 잘 드러나 있다. 롤즈의 저작으로는 위의 세 주저 외에 하버드대학교 강의에 기초한 『공정으로서의 정의: 재서술』(1989; 2001)과 『도덕철학사 강의』(2000), 그리고 사후 출간된 『정치철학사 강의』(2007) 등이 있다.
