라틴아메리카를 대표하는 해방철학자로 아르헨티나, 스페인, 프랑스, 독일에서 철학, 종교학, 역사학을 공부했다. 이스라엘 키부츠에서 목수로 일하면서 만난, 폴 고티에(Paul Gauthier) 신부의 영향으로 해방 사상의 단초를 얻는다. 라틴아메리카의 복잡한 사회 상황, 유럽에서 겪은 차별, 몇 차례의 지적 회심의 결과로, “해방철학”이라는 길을 열었다. 세계화와 신자유주의 경제 질서에 대한 비판 뿐 아니라 철학자로서 사상의 식민화를 지속적으로 비판했다. 주저 『해방철학』(1977), 『공동체 윤리』(분도출판사 1990)와『 미지의 마르크스를 향하여』(갈무리 2021), 리카르도 페트렐라와 세르주 라투슈와의 공저 『탈성장』(대장간 2021)이 국내에 소개됐다.
