역사에 관한 연구에 혁명을 일으킨 프랑스 아날 학파의 리더. 1902년에 프랑스의 로렌 지방에서 태어났다. 소르본 대학교에서 역사학과 지리학을 전공하여 1923년에 학위를 받았고, 알제리, 프랑스, 브라질 등지에서 강의했다. 제2차 세계대전 중에 독일군의 포로가 되어 5년 동안 감옥에 있었는데, 이때 그의 첫 번째 대작인 『지중해 : 펠리페 2세 시대의 지중해 세계(La Mediterranee et le Monde Mediterraneen a l’Epoque de Philippe II)』를 구상했으며 이 책은 1949년에 출판되었다. 콜레주 드 프랑스의 교수로 재직했고 1956년 「아날(Annales)」의 편집인이 되었다. 프랑스 사회과학고등연구원 소장, 인간과학연구소의 소장을 역임했으며, 1983년에는 아카데미 프랑세즈의 회원으로 선출되었다. 수많은 세계 유수의 대학교의 명예박사 학위를 받았고 프랑스 정부로부터 레지옹 도뇌르, 교육공로자 훈장을 받았다. 1985년에 영면했다. 주요 저서로 『지중해』, 『프랑스의 정체성(L’Identite de la France)』, 『자본주의의 역동성(La Dynamique du Capitalisme)』, 『문명의 문법(Grammaire des Civilisations)』, 『지중해에 대한 추억(Les Memoires de la Mediterranee)』 등이 있다.
