제임스 패커와 존 스토트를 잇는 21세기 최고의 복음주의 신학자 알리스터 맥그래스는 1953년 북아일랜드 벨파스트에서 태어났다. 어린 시절부터 명민하고 수학과 물리, 화학 등에 관심이 많았던 그는 영국 옥스퍼드대학교에서 분자생물학을 전공하여 22세 때 박사 학위를 취득하고 2년 후 같은 대학교에서 신학 박사 학위를 받는 놀라운 학업적 성취를 이루었다. 한때 자유주의에 심취하기도 했으나, 결국에는 복음주의가 진리임을 깨닫고 리처드 백스터, 존 오웬, 조나단 에드워즈 등의 영향을 받은 복음주의 신학자가 되었다. 제임스 패커의 수제자로 캐나다 밴쿠버에 있는 리전트칼리지에서 조직신학을 가르쳤고, 옥스퍼드대 위클리프홀의 학장으로 있으면서 조직신학과 역사신학을 가르쳤다. 옥스퍼드대 안드레아스 이드레오스(Andreas Idreos) 과학과 종교 석좌교수이며, 옥스퍼드기독교변증센터 소장이다. 지성과 영성을 겸비한 세계적인 신학자로, 다양한 학문을 섭렵한 이력을 토대로 기독교 신학의 현대적 의미를 재해석하고 총정리하여 균형 잡힌 시각에서 기독교를 논증한다. 기독교 지성의 선봉장으로서 리처드 도킨스로 대표되는 무신론적 변증에 대한 설득력 있는 논박으로 잘 알려져 있다. 국내에 번역된 그의 저서로는 『이신칭의』, 『십자가로 돌아가라』, 『한 권으로 읽는 기독교』, 『지성적 회심』, 『교리의 기원』, 『역사신학』(이상 생명의말씀사), 『기독교, 그 위험한 사상의 역사』(국제제자훈련원) 등이 있다. 그의 저서 가운데 『The Unknown God: Searching for Spiritual Fulfillment』(Eerdmans)는 2000년 Christianity Today Book Awards 영성 부문 1위를 차지한 바 있다.
