특히 민주주의 이론과 여성주의 정치 이론에 큰 기여를 해온 저명한 정치학자로서 영국 옥스포드대학교에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 미국 캘리포니아주립대학교(UCLA) 정치학과에 오랜 기간 재직 후 은퇴하였다. 여성으로서는 처음 국제정치학회 회장으로 재임한 바 있으며, 영국학술원 등에서 펠로우로 임명되기도 했다. 유럽과 미국, 그리고 오스트레일리아 등 삼 개 대륙에서 활동하며 국제적인 경력을 쌓았으며, 주요 저서로는 <남과 여: 은폐된 성적 계약>(1989), <정치적 의무의 문제: 자유주의 이론의 비판적 분석>(1979), <참여와 민주주의 이론>(l970) 등이 있다.
