Part performance lecture, part auto-fictional memoir, Divine Invention is Sergio Blanco's attempt to say something new about love. To do so, he recalls his own experiences of love, true and invented, and explores the history of love in art, literature, music, and science. The result is a life-affirming new play.

Written by acclaimed Franco-Uruguayan playwright Sergio Blanco (Thebes Land, The Rage of Narcissus, When You Pass Over My Tomb) and translated by his long-time collaborator Daniel Goldman, Divine Invention is 'collaboration to savour by two masters of the form' (Lyn Gardner).

This edition was published to coincide with the English language world premiere at Edinburgh Fringe Festival's Summerhall in August 2024.

현재 스페인어권에서 가장 유명한 극작가이자 연출가 중 한 명. 1971년 우루과이에서 태어나 몬테비데오에서 청소년기를 보냈고 현재는 파리에 거주하고 있다. 대학에서 고전 문학을 전공한 뒤 프랑스 코메디아 프랑세즈에서 연출을 공부하고 전적으로 희곡 집필과 연출 활동을 하고 있다. 대표작으로는 〈도살(Slaughter)〉, 〈야만(Barbarie)〉, 〈카산드라(Kassandra)〉, 〈다윈의 도약(El salto de Darwin)〉, 〈오스티아(Ostia)〉, 〈뒤셀도르프의 포효 소리(El bramido de Dusseldorf)〉, 〈당신이 내 무덤 위를 지나갈 때(Cuando pases sobre mi tumba)〉, 〈교통(Trafico)〉, 〈실종에 대한 지도 제작(Cartografia de una desaparicion)〉, 〈코비드 451(COVID 451)〉 등이 있다. 그의 연극은 전 세계 25개국 이상에서 출판되고 공연되었으며, 2022년 밀라노의 피콜로 극장에서 신작 〈동물원(Zoo)〉을 발표했다. 극작과 연출뿐만 아니라 세계 각국에서 세미나와 강의를 하는 등 학술 활동도 활발히 병행하고 있다. 2013년 우루과이 국립극단의 초청을 받아 1년 동안 국립극단 연구소장으로 일하고, 2014년 우루과이 국립 무대예술 학교에서 1년 동안 수행할 오토 픽션을 주제로 한 연극 연구를 진행했다.
