The faint reflections under the specular surface in Kwon’s paintings actually feel more realistic than the symmetrical images drawn in various bright colors. If you turn his series of reflections upside-down, an astonishing fact is revealed. You will feel as if you are gazing back up through the specular surface from underneath, and when the point of view is reversed in this way, the landscape on top will cease to look like the actual subject, and appear as an exaggeration of an imaginary reality. In Kwon’s paintings, the world is repeated twice, and the imaginary world developed through repetition conversely emphasizes the abstractness of the pictorial subjects replicated from the existent. Here, an additional “hidden” dimension appears. The reflections mirror the subjects above the specular surface, but the reflected images are placed in a situation of chiaroscuro in that they are moving further away from the background between the gaps of the actual subjects. The reason for a figure in a drawing to saunter across a specular surface and look at the other side of ripples is a feeling that some type of actual existent will be lying there. An apparition which is more realistic than the actual existent; It is a dream dreaming of reality.



권기수의 회화에서 흐릿한 톤으로 그려진 반사면 아래의 반영들, 대칭적 이미지들은 다채로운 원색들로 그려진 윗부분의 이미지들보다 오히려 더 실재에 가깝게 느껴진다. 그의 ‘반영’ 연작들을 위아래로 뒤집어 보면 놀라운 사실이 눈에 들어온다. 마치 반사면의 아래에서 그것의 위쪽을 거꾸로 바라보는 것 같은 느낌을 받는 것이다. 흥미로운 점은 이렇게 뒤집어 바라볼 경우 원래의 윗부분의 풍경이 더 이상 실제가 아닌 과장된 가상의 현실처럼 보인다는 점이다. 권기수의 회화에서 세계는 두 번 반복하며, 반복을 통해 떠오른 가상적 세계는 역으로 실재로서 재현된 회화적 대상들이 얼마나 관념적인 것인지를 강조한다. 여기에서 다시 한 번 ‘숨겨진’ 차원이 등장한다. 반영은 반사면 위의 대상들을 반복하고 있지만 반영된 이미지들은 그 대상들 사이의 틈에서, 배후에서 멀어지고 있다는 점에서 일종의 ‘반명반음’(chiaroscura) 상태에 놓여 있다. 회화 속의 인물이 반사면 위를 거닐면서 파문의 이면을 바라보는 이유는 그곳에 어떤 실재가 가로놓여 있을 것이라는 예감 때문이리라. 환영이면서 실재보다 더 실제적인 것, 꿈이 실제를 꿈꾸는 것이다.
