전문직 윤리로서의 공학윤리는 일차적으로 전문직에서의 윤리적 의사 결정과 문제해결능력을 기르는 데 목적이 있지만, 이것을 넘어서서 ‘인간의 이해와 윤리적 삶의 요청’ 이라는 보다 광범위한 철학적 맥락을 요청하기에 이를 포괄적으로 다루고, 전문직으로서의 직업적 소명의식과 책임을 길러내는 방향으로 내용을 기술하였다. 아무쪼록 이 책을 통하여 도덕 쟁점들에 관해 비판적이고도 독립적인 판단능력을 함양할 수 있기를 기대한다. 아울러 미래의 공학자, 전문직 기술자로서 사회발전에 대한 책무를 느끼면서 ‘도덕적 자율성’(moral autonomy)을 잘 발휘할 수 있다면, 이는 곧 저자의 영광이며 큰 기쁨이 될 것이다. 옴 산티!
우리사회에서 공학윤리가 요청된 배경에는 공학인증제 실시와 관련이 있다. 공학인증제는 공과대학에서 각 학과에 맞게 특정한 커리큘럼이 있으며 이를 반드시 이수해야 획득하는 인증제를 말한다. 이는 곧 각 학과마다 들어야하는 과목들이 다르게 배정되어 있지만, 공학인 증제를 획득하게 되면, 국제적으로 그 분야의 공학자로서 인정을 해주 는 제도이다. 예전에는 공대를 입학하여도 국제표준의 커리큘럼이 없었기 때문에, 국제표준 기준에 관계없이 학점을 이수하면 졸업이 가능 하다. 이제 세계화 시대에 국제표준 이수 과목에 근거한 이수이행 여부가 공학인증의 필수요건으로 자리 잡아 가는 추세이다.
