platinum plat은 ‘은(silver), 은빛’을 의미한다. platinum은 은과 구별하기 힘든 ‘백금’이다. 원소 기호는 Pt다. 백금은 은보다 단단하며 녹이 슬지 않는 성질이 있다. 18세기에 스페인 사람들이 식민지였던 멕시코에서 발견해 platinum으로 이름 붙였다. ‘white gold’는 백금이 아니라 금에 니켈을 넣은 합금이다.
