전남 해남 출신으로 동국대학교 국문학과를 거쳐 중앙대대학원을 졸업(문학박사)했다. 1960년 동아일보 신춘문예, 1963년 문학평론으로 문단에 데뷔했고 국제PEN 한국본부 사무국장 및 이사를 역임했다. 제9회 시문학상, 제3회 비평문학상, 펜문학상, 윤동주문학상 등을 수상했으며 한서대학교 교수 및 예술대학원장을 역임했다. 현재 월간 '조선문학' 발행인 겸 주간으로 있다. 중요 저서로는 시집에 '귀로', '사랑법', 꽃시집', '박진환시전집' 등 29권의 시집이 있고 평론집으로는 '한국현대시인론', '현대시론', '21C시학과 시법' 등 다수와 '한국시의 공간구조연구', '21C시학'. '시창작론' 외 다수의 역저가 있다.
